The Kankakee Nursery is seeking a dedicated Propagator / Assistant Production Manager to join our horticultural team. As we are in our 101st year, we are looking for an individual to help us grow. This role involves cultivating and managing plant propagation processes to support our nursery and greenhouse operations. It will also oversee various production processes including but not limited to: planting, bareroot harvesting, bareroot storage, irrigation, pruning and other cultural practices. The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of plant cultivation, plant biology, irrigation systems, and pest management, with experience working outdoors, and in greenhouse environments. This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic setting focused on sustainable crop production and horticultural excellence.

Duties
• Propagate plants through various methods such as evergreen cuttings and budding of deciduous trees, ensuring healthy growth.
• Manage irrigation systems to maintain optimal soil moisture levels for different crops and plants.
• Monitor and control environmental conditions within greenhouses and outdoor areas.
• Help oversee field planting, bareroot harvesting, bareroot storage units, pruning and other cultural practices.
• Oversee greenhouse cultivation activities, including planting, pruning and spraying.
• Conduct regular plant pest control using integrated pest management strategies to prevent infestations in the propagation department.
• Identify plant pests, diseases, and deficiencies through plant identification skills, and take appropriate corrective actions.
• Operate hand tools and mechanical equipment safely for planting, trimming, or other horticultural tasks.
• Collaborate with horticultural teams to manage crop schedules and ensure efficient workflow.
• Assist the production manager with other varies duties throughout the year.

Skills
• Knowledge and understanding of the propagation and processes.
• Basic knowledge of irrigation management and irrigation systems.
• Proven growing experience across various crops and plants in outdoor or greenhouse settings.
• Knowledge and understanding of integrated pest management (IPM) for effective plant pest control.
• Ability to manage horticultural teams or work collaboratively within a team environment.
• Hands-on experience at a nursery or greenhouse.
• Knowledge of tools and equipment used in horticulture such as hand tools or small machinery.
• Plant identification skills for diagnosing plant health issues accurately.
• Computer skills
